I've been wanting to try 608 for a while. I saw some great reviews about the Chef. We had 6 people and we got a nice spot outside. Our server was Leigh. She was attentive and very friendly. We had a nice bottle of Rose and there were good beers on tap also. I had the Fried Chicken and it was amazing!! It was served over jalepeno corn bread!! So good!! The guys had burgers that were also great! The vegetable pasta was a hit too. The strawberry shortcake was a nice dessert. We really enjoyed our food and service. We will be back for lobster tacos at lunch time!! So we went back for the Lobster Tacos and Mine were awesome! But I must warn you- my husband's were raw it was opaque and cold inside, total gross out bummer!
In a world where TGIChileBees, KenTacoHuts, and StarDunkinDonalds dot the landscape like stars in the midnight sky... a movement has begun... for those seeking liberation from the oppressive "deep state" of junkfoodism. 608 is one such bastion of liberation. Keeping under the radar of the oppressors, the facility doesn't try to be too hip or too trendy. You could send the whole eatery back thirty years and it wouldn't look out of place. There's a patio with tables placed on pavement made uneven by the forces of nostalgia. Inside... a faux chic atmosphere, oversized TVs, servers with knowing-smiles in matching garb... distract from the magic occurring in the small kitchen at the far back. Glance at the menu and you'll find comfortable and familiar classics that you may have seen at your local TGIChileBees. Starters like Caesar's salad and fries. Entrées like burgers, tacos, pasta, ribs, seafood, and fried chicken. But at the 608, the talented chef-hero of La Résistance named Willy Eick sources farm-to-kitchen ingredients that have never seen the inside of a freezer, microwave, Monsanto truck, or styrofoam container. The food is grown locally at Cyclops Farms in Fire Mountain; and other nearby San Diego farmers and makers. He reimagines the dishes in an expression of simple, fresh, tapas-style artistry. All of which are prepared with great precision and passion... and elevated with bold flavors. You'll start with a glass of estate wine or beer; paired with an amalgamation of greens, tomatoes, scallions, avocados, beets, and/or jalapeños. As for the mains, the fusion of braised short ribs with Panang curry sauce is simply mesmerizing. The fried chicken has the right balance of crisp and tender; spice and heat. Finish with a dish made of citrus, peaches, and/or strawberries. In the end... you'll leave satisfied, slightly buzzed, and excited... with only one thing on your mind: "Viva La Résistance!"
Friends have been raving about this place so I decided to check it out earlier this week. Food was terrific and presentation was similar to what you'd expect from a Mille Fleurs type resto at half the cost! I give the food a solid 9/10, presentation 10/10. Chef personally came to our table and explained in detail every dish. Well done! I'd be remiss if I didn't also say the staff was friendly and attentive. There's a culinary renaissance happening in Oceanside, don't miss it!
Let me interrupt this Yelp Spring Break review thread...to acknowledge a special place called 608 in Oceanside, California. This local eatery opened approximately one year ago. The husband and I were heading out to one of our tried and true spots to kick off our Memorial Day weekend. However, we decided to make a detour to 608 on Mission as we were driving down the PCH. It's hard to believe we didn't try this place sooner! Since it was out first visit, we decided to order from the 3 course menu for $35. This allows each diner to sample an appetizer, entree and dessert! We both picked three different items and shared with one another. I chose the Burrata Salad (mixed greens, grilled tomato, persimmon and sorrel vinaigrette) the Fried Chicken (cornbread, honey, jalapeno and green onions) and the Tangerine Dessert (white chocolate, persimmon and sorrel). I cannot express how satisfied I was with each of these unique and flavorful dishes (and my husband's selections were fire starters as well). We sat in the restaurant window, watched people pass by and sipped 608 private label Pinot Noir at $8 per glass. It's the perfect place to spend a sunny afternoon, in the ever thriving foodie scene of Oceanside. Let the fireworks begin! #608 #Oceanside #FoodieScene #OnFire
I definitely like 608 because the food is very different and the prices are outstanding! I've seen reviews of this place and it seemed alright and the pictures looked pretty good. So I came in for desserts but I saw the menu and ordered the glazed pork belly. It wasn't a lot of food and I was fine with that because I only paid around eleven bucks. The pork belly was really good and juicy but not too sweet from the glaze. I ordered a strawberry dessert which was really tasty then I ordered a pistachio dessert and it was alright. I'm for sure coming back plus they have a small bar with a few beers on tap. They have a couple of TV's so you can watch a game but I don't think they turn the sound on.
We had dinner there on Mother's Day. After we were all seated and placed our drink and food order, server returned to us to say they were too busy all day that they ran out of short ribs. Whaaaaaattt? That's the only thing that enticed us to come in the first place!! We told him to cancel everything and that we'll just head to the neighboring restaurant. When we were all getting up, voila! he joyfully announced that there are still 2 remaining short ribs in the back. So we all sat down again. Not a moment later, food started coming in heavy hot plates and we all shared family style. We enjoyed the short ribs in panang curry ($15), fried chicken (omg the cornbread is fantastic!!!), scallop ramen ($16) and burger ($15). The fried ramen ($16) was a bit of a let-down: tasteless and bland. We took some of the panang curry of the short ribs to add to the fried noodles to put some flavor in there. The cured pork belly ($12) was very salty and the meat was so tough- it was so hard to cut up into mini bite size. We also thought the white beans didn't go well with the macaroni. It was a weird dish. Ceasar salad was so-so for $10. The servings are not too big and it's a good place to go for groups so you get to sample more and share from the limited menu which changes every few weeks according to the server. They only have beer and wine. No cocktails.
Nice little place in the center part of Oceanside, the place has a nice decor, making you feel like you're really in San Diego now. The menu is simple and small but it's to be expected for a tapas/small plates place. We came here with my girlfriend who was visiting from out of town. She wanted to try a place that says San Diego and after some research, I found this place. We got here on a Tuesday night and it wasn't busy, but it was still a good amount of people coming in later in the day. They have a nice selection of crafts beer and I don't know what my friend and husband ordered, but the beer that tasted like Peanut Butter was delicious. I think it was Mother Earth beer. My friend got the duck skin tacos to share, I got the baby back ribs to share and my husband got the bone marrow ceviche, all were fun to eat and really good. I just wish we had more of it. They didn't have a kids menu but they offered chicken fingers and fries for my kids. It was one of the best chicken fingers plate I've seen for kids. For dessert, we got a twist on a strawberry shortcake which was topped with matcha powder and maserated strawberries. It was delicious! The waitress was really nice and came by to check on us often. They offered water without asking and refilled our glasses without missing a beat. Overall, I liked it a lot and would give it another try. Don't come here if you're expecting big plates or a full meal though.
What an excellent addition 608 is to downtown North 'O'! Our neighbors led us here with their tales of baby back ribs, lobster grilled cheeses and even vegan offerings. Having tried just about every restaurant west of the 5 on Mission, I had tired of the offerings and was thrilled to learn of a new joint to sample. But seriously - come with a small group and sample everything 608 has to offer! My husband and I shared the Duroc baby back ribs ($10), roasted Cyclops Farms vegetables ($9) and vegan risotto ($9). The star of the meal was definitely the ribs - the marinade was sticky sweet and caramelized, the meat itself was tender and falling right off the bone. We both agreed that it was up there with the best ribs we'd ever tasted - top 2 for sure. We couldn't help but send our compliments to the chef which our server relayed for us. Those ribs were stellar! The roasted vegetables were tasty and had a surprisingly spicy kick that neither of us were expecting, although the flavor worked. It was a nice assortment of seasonal veggies - the baby carrots were cooked perfectly. The vegan risotto was creamy (sans real cream!), mushroom-y and perfectly seasoned. It complemented the heartiness of the ribs and the crunchy rustic medley of veggies. Overall, our meal was excellent. I can't wait to return to sample more of 608's offerings, especially as new menu items come into season. Welcome to the neighborhood, 608!
608 IS one another wonderful restaurant in Downtown Oceanside. They offer a variety of small plates. The plates/portions are small (obviously). As the menu/staff recommend, order several items and share them. It's a great way to try a lot of different plates. We started with a delicious charcuterie plate. It had a nice balance of cheese/meat. We ordered the following items: 608 Burger, Octopus, Mary's Airline Chicken Breast, Lobster Tail Tacos, and Braised Short Rib. All of the plates were delicious, but the chicken was rather plain/nothing spectacular. We really, really enjoyed the Lobster Tail Tacos. We finished our meal with a delicious Strawberry Cake. They have a nice selection of local craft beers on tap...nice to see local beer. The service was great. I look forward to trying the rest of the menu! *608 is located where Swami's Cafe once was.*
